This bibliophilic organization has been in continuous operation since 1812 when famed bibliographer and collector Thomas Frognall Dibdin organized a dinner to commemorate the sale at auction of the Duke of Roxburghe’s library. Famous members include biographer James Boswell, fine press printer Sydney Cockerell, and famous American forger Thomas J. Wyse. Since its organization in the nineteenth century it has published over 300 volumes.

Its publications are in two states, one published by a member to be given to all the other members and one published by the club itself and generally held for sale through the antiquarian book trade. Its publishing program, in the words of the Club itself, is “devoted to printing unpublished documents and reprinting rare printed texts, among them unknown or neglected works of English literature and history.”
